Early 2025, a cosmetics client doing export business asked us: "Do you do packaging testing? Our bottles and boxes need to be sent to SGS for full testing."
Here's a common misunderstanding among outsiders — packaging testing is not done by print shops, but by third-party testing institutions. The print shop's role is: prepare the client's packaging samples before submission, to avoid non-compliance rework.
Type 1 Testing: Compression (Box Load-Bearing)
Testing target: corrugated boxes, gift boxes, shipping outer cartons. Testing method is GB/T 4857.4, place the box on a pressure machine, apply uniform pressure until the box deforms or breaks, record the ultimate compression strength.
Real data reference:
- 3-layer corrugated (B flute) box: compression strength 4-6 kg/cm²
- 5-layer corrugated (AB flute) box: compression strength 8-12 kg/cm²
- 7-layer corrugated: compression strength 15-20 kg/cm²
Submission cost: testing institution charges 500-800 RMB/sample, cycle 3-5 working days. The most common client failure is "5-layer corrugated chose AB flute, but couldn't handle 8kg load" — in this case the print shop needs to self-test with a simple pressure machine before submission.
Our print shop bought a 5000 RMB simple pressure machine (range 0-100kg), self-testing 3 samples before each submission. If the client's budget is tight, only 1 sample can be sent to the third party for an official report.
Type 2 Testing: Drop
Testing target: finished packaging boxes. Testing method is GB/T 4857.5, free fall from fixed height onto cement floor, check if products inside the box are damaged.
Common drop heights:
- Domestic shipping: 0.5-0.8m
- International shipping: 1.0-1.5m
- Air freight: 1.8m
Submission cost: testing institution charges 300-500 RMB/sample, cycle 2-3 working days. This test has a very high first-pass rate, print shops basically don't get stuck here.
Our print shop recommends clients prepare 3 samples for drop testing, testing edge, corner, and face drops respectively — edge drops usually break the easiest. Boxes that fail drop testing mostly have adhesive opening at joints.
Type 3 Testing: Vibration
Testing target: long-distance shipping packaging boxes. Testing method is GB/T 4857.7, fix the box on a vibration table, simulate truck/train/aircraft vibration frequency (5-200Hz), for 30-60 minutes.
Real scenario: a glass bottle client — after vibration testing the bottle body was fine, but the cap loosened — reason was vibration caused the cap friction coefficient to decrease. Recommend print shops do a physical vibration test before submission.
Submission cost: testing institution charges 600-1000 RMB/sample, cycle 5-7 working days. This test is very common in export packaging.
Our print shop recommends clients pay attention to 3 details when doing vibration testing: vibration direction (up-down, left-right, front-back all needed), vibration frequency range (5-200Hz full band), vibration duration (recommend 60 minutes).
Type 4 Testing: Stack
Testing target: warehouse-stacked boxes. Testing method is GB/T 4857.3, place weights on top of the box (usually 2 times box weight), for 24-72 hours, check if the bottom box deforms.
Real data:
- 3-layer stack (regular warehouse): qualified compression ≥3 times box weight
- 5-layer stack (high-rack warehouse): qualified compression ≥5 times box weight
- 8-layer stack (extreme case): qualified compression ≥8 times box weight
Submission cost: testing institution charges 400-700 RMB/sample, cycle 3-5 working days. This is easily underestimated — if the client miscalculates warehouse stack height, the print shop gets implicated too.
In April 2025, one of our beverage clients got a return: warehouse stacked 6 layers, but the box design only considered 3-layer stacking. Bottom boxes deformed, glass bottles inside were crushed. Print shop had no responsibility (produced per client specs), but client lost 20000 RMB.
Type 5 Testing: Temperature & Humidity
Testing target: temperature-sensitive packaging (food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical). Testing method is to put samples in a constant temperature and humidity chamber, simulate 40°C / 90% RH extreme environment, for 7-30 days, check if packaging deforms, leaks, or molds.
Submission cost: testing institution charges 1500-3000 RMB/sample, cycle 7-30 days. This is the most expensive and slowest, but print shops basically don't need to submit — clients do it themselves.
What print shops can do: confirm in advance the client's product sensitivity to temperature and humidity. For example, lotions and creams in cosmetics are very sensitive to 40°C high temperatures — plastic bottles and tubes used by print shops must not deform or leak at 40°C.
Type 6 Testing: Permeability
Testing target: food preservation packaging, coffee capsule packaging, milk powder cans, etc. Testing method is GB/T 1038, use a permeability tester to measure oxygen transmission rate.
Real data:
- Regular PE bag: oxygen transmission rate 1000-3000 cm³/m²·day·atm
- Aluminum foil composite bag: oxygen transmission rate <1 cm³/m²·day·atm
- Co-extruded film: oxygen transmission rate 50-200 cm³/m²·day·atm
Submission cost: testing institution charges 800-1500 RMB/sample, cycle 3-5 working days. This is most easily overlooked by print shops — many clients order aluminum foil composite bags, but the print shop gives them regular PE composite, permeability differs by orders of magnitude.
In December 2024, one of our coffee capsule clients got a return: client ordered aluminum foil composite bags, shelf life marked 18 months. Result the print shop used regular PET/PE composite bags, coffee oxidized in 3 months. Entire batch of 50000 bags returned, loss 150000 RMB.
3 Accounts Print Shops Must Calculate Before Submission
Based on the 6 testing types, print shops must calculate 3 accounts before submission:
- Testing fee: doing all 6 types is about 4500-7500 RMB/sample, recommend clients only do the critical 2-3 items. Food clients must do compression+drop+permeability, cosmetics clients must do compression+drop+vibration, export clients add temp-humidity
- Testing cycle: fast testing 3-5 days, slow testing 7-30 days, will affect delivery. Print shops must reserve 1 week testing cycle
- Non-compliance rework cost: if a single test fails, the cost to rework the entire batch is 10-50 times the testing fee. So print shop self-testing is very important
3 Simple Self-Test Methods for Print Shops
Print shops wanting to save money can self-test before submission:
- Compression self-test: use a 5000 RMB simple pressure machine, apply pressure to check box ultimate load
- Drop self-test: drop 3 samples from 0.8m height, check for damage
- Permeability self-test: put samples in sealed bag, pressurize to check for leaks
Pass rate for self-test before submission is 95%, direct submission pass rate is only 60-70%. Self-test cost is low, non-compliance rework cost is high.

Is packaging testing done by print shops or third parties?
Third-party testing institutions, such as SGS, CTI, Pony Testing, etc. Print shops only handle sample preparation and simple self-testing before submission.
Can print shops buy simple pressure machines to do compression testing themselves?
Yes. We bought a 5000 RMB simple pressure machine with 0-100kg range. Good enough for internal quality control, but clients needing official reports still need third party.
Is permeability testing mandatory?
If the client deals with food, cosmetics, coffee, milk powder and other products requiring preservation, yes it's mandatory. If the client is regular gift boxes, no need.
