The "ideal effect" the designer sees on the screen may become completely distorted once it reaches the factory floor. The first step in getting the design right is understanding the physical constraints.

1. Bleed (3mm)

All elements must have at least 3mm of bleed from the finished edge. This is to accommodate die-cutting tolerance and trimming shifts. If the design extends to the edge, the die-cut finished edge may show white borders or have key information cut off.

2. Color Mode (CMYK)

Design files must use CMYK mode. Do not use RGB or PANTONE (unless a special spot color process is required). RGB colors seen on screen (such as bright blue or bright purple) will appear noticeably darker when printed in CMYK. Verify important colors in advance using a color swatch or digital proof.

3. Resolution (300dpi)

Bitmap assets must have a resolution of at least 300dpi; below 150dpi the print will appear blurry. Logos and icons are recommended in vector format (AI, EPS, PDF) so they remain crisp at any scale.

4. Outline Fonts

Outline all text before sending the file to prevent the factory from substituting or misplacing fonts they do not have. If editable text must be kept, package the font files together.

5. Black Color Treatment

Do not use pure black K100 for large solid black areas (it looks gray and not rich enough). It is recommended to use K60 + C40 (deep blue-black) or K70 + C30 + M30 + Y30 (warm black), which print fuller and richer. Keep small text and fine lines at K100 to avoid ghosting.

Color Management: Actual Colors vs. Screen Differences

Every screen displays colors with some deviation. The professional practice is to produce digital proofs (small-batch print samples) as the color reference. For large-batch offset printing, colors are also affected by paper grammage and surface gloss. Design file colors can be pre-adjusted: for designs to be laminated with a glossy film, the colors can be set 5-10% lighter than the target color; for designs to be laminated with a matte film, the colors can essentially follow the target color.

Compatibility of Post-Press Finishing Processes

Hot Foil Stamping (Gold/Silver)

The hot foil stamping area should not exceed 30% of the box surface. Large-area foil stamping is costly and prone to edge fraying. Fine-line foil stamping (e.g., less than 1mm) tends to break, so it is recommended to thicken the lines to 1.5mm or more. Do not design the foil stamping area on crease lines, otherwise the foil layer will crack during folding.

Spot UV

Spot UV is similar to foil stamping; lines should not be too fine. Do not design UV areas on crease lines or tuck-flap positions, as the UV layer tends to burst when bent. The UV thickness is recommended to be controlled at 0.5-1.5 microns; excessive thickness affects the tactile feel.

Embossing/Debossing

Embossing effects perform well on thick paper (300g or above) and grey board, while the effect is not obvious on thin paper or laminated paper. It is recommended to leave a 2-3mm "buffer zone" around the embossed area to avoid affecting surrounding graphics.

Confirm the following documents are complete before submitting to the factory:

1. Flat dieline (with die lines, crease lines, and annotations)
2. Print files (CMYK, 300dpi, outlined)
3. Process specifications (dimensions and positions of foil stamping/UV/embossing)
