What is color box packaging? A cross-sectional view reveals that "color box" ≠ "paper box"

Last week a customer asked me:

"I want to make a cosmetics gift box. The Taobao customer service calls it a 'color box,' and the printing factory also says they can make color boxes — what exactly is a color box?"

I said: A color box is a composite structure laminated from 5 layers of materials, not as simple as a 'colored paper box'.

90% of customers are misled by the name "color box" and think it means a "paper box printed in color." In fact, a color box is made by laminating multiple layers of paper with greyboard — it is completely different from an ordinary paper box.

The core is the grey board in the middle—it provides stiffness and structural strength. The face paper and inner liner are merely the "skin."

Why is the term "Color Box" misleading?

The term "color box" is actually an industry colloquialism—used to distinguish it from a "corrugated box":

• Corrugated box—three-ply corrugated paperboard (common in e-commerce shipping), inexpensive with good cushioning
• Color box—5-ply laminated composite board (common for cosmetic gift boxes), more expensive with good stiffness

It is called a "color box" not because it is "colorful"—but because the surface layer can be printed in color. However, what truly determines its grade is the gray board in the middle—an ordinary paper box has only 1–2 plies, while a color box has 5 plies.

The Essential Differences Between Color Boxes and Paper Boxes

Simply looking at "whether it is colored"—paper boxes can also be printed in color. The difference lies in the structure and craftsmanship.

What Are Color Boxes Suitable For?

Color boxes have a high cost and are suitable for high unit price / gifting scenarios:

• Cosmetic gift boxes (serum / face cream / perfume) — single set 200+ RMB
• Food gift boxes (zongzi / mooncakes / chocolate) — single set 100+ RMB
• Electronics gift boxes (mobile phones / smart hardware) — single set 500+ RMB

For e-commerce promotional packs (10-50 RMB price range), choose corrugated boxes — cost control is the priority.
