In October 2025, a printer in Shanghai that makes cosmetic outer boxes received an order from an eco-friendly brand. The customer required 100% recycled paper and the brand's main color 'Forest Green' Pantone 357C. The printer used the previous 'white cardboard + Pantone 357C' formula to print, and the color difference came out to ΔE=4.2, which the customer rejected.

The printer owner came to me, and his first question was: 'I've been using Pantone 357C for over a decade, why doesn't it work on recycled paper?'

I replied: 'The fiber composition, surface sizing, and ink absorbency of recycled paper are all different from white cardboard. Directly applying the white cardboard ink formula, the color difference will inevitably be unqualified. The ink absorption differences between different recycled paper contents (30% / 50% / 100%) can differ in ΔE by 4-5.'

1. Recycled paper is not 'darker = easier to print' — 3 categories of content correspond to 3 categories of printability

Many printer owners think recycled paper is 'grayish, everything prints grayish'. This understanding is wrong. The printability of recycled paper is mainly determined by 3 factors, and the influence of different recycled paper contents is completely different.

Factor 1: Fiber composition. Recycled paper is made from recycled waste paper (newspapers, books, office paper) re-pulped. 30% recycled paper = 70% virgin wood pulp + 30% recycled fiber; 50% recycled paper = 50% virgin wood pulp + 50% recycled fiber; 100% recycled paper = all recycled fiber (may also contain 5-15% office waste). Virgin wood pulp fibers are long, with high whiteness; recycled fibers are short, with low whiteness and contain impurities (ink residues, gums).

Factor 2: Surface sizing. The surface sizing amount of white cardboard is 1-2g/m², designed to prevent ink from penetrating too quickly. The surface sizing amount of recycled paper is adjusted according to the recycled fiber ratio. The surface sizing of 30% recycled paper is close to that of white cardboard, while the surface sizing of 100% recycled paper is usually increased by 30-50% to prevent color distortion caused by excessive ink penetration.

Factor 3: Ink absorbency. Recycled paper fibers are short and have a loose structure, with ink absorbency 20-40% higher than white cardboard. If the ink is absorbed too quickly, the color becomes lighter and saturation decreases; if absorbed too slowly, drying is slow and smudging is easy. The superposition of these 3 factors leads to huge differences in printability for different recycled paper contents.

Actual data: using the same Pantone 357C ink and the same printing parameters (printing speed 8000 sheets/hour, printing pressure 0.2MPa) on 4 types of paper, the color difference ΔE (compared to the standard sample) is as follows:

· White cardboard (virgin wood pulp): ΔE=0.8 (passed, close to standard)

· 30% recycled paper: ΔE=2.1 (slightly exceeds the 2.0 passing line)

· 50% recycled paper: ΔE=3.4 (clearly exceeds standard)

· 100% recycled paper: ΔE=4.2 (seriously exceeds standard, customer rejected)

This data shows one core conclusion: every 20% increase in recycled paper content, the color difference ΔE increases by approximately 1.0. If the printer does not adjust the ink formula, direct printing will inevitably fail.

2. 3 categories of colors with 'ink absorption differences' — green / red / black are especially sensitive

Different colors have different sensitivities to recycled paper ink absorption. From 2023-2025 actual proofing data of 12 printers, I found 3 categories of colors most sensitive to recycled paper.

Color 1: Green (forest green, olive green, mint green). Green ink is mixed from yellow + cyan; the cyan tone of recycled paper is absorbed 30% faster than the yellow tone, resulting in mixed colors being yellowed and lighter. The same Pantone 357C, when printed on 100% recycled paper, appears 15-20% more yellow than white cardboard, with color difference ΔE up to 4-5.

Color 2: Red (true red, rose red, brick red). Red ink is mixed from magenta + yellow; the magenta of recycled paper is absorbed 20% faster than yellow, resulting in red appearing orange. The same Pantone 485C, when printed on 50% recycled paper, appears 10-15% more orange than white cardboard, with color difference ΔE approximately 3.0-3.5.

Color 3: Deep black (carbon black, dark gray, midnight black). Black ink is composed of carbon black + toner. The loose fiber structure of recycled paper causes carbon black particles to penetrate into the paper, reducing surface blackness. The same Pantone Black 6C, when printed on 100% recycled paper, appears 8-12% lighter than white cardboard, with color difference ΔE approximately 2.5-3.0.

In contrast, some colors actually print more accurately on recycled paper. Blue (especially cobalt blue, deep blue), white, gray on recycled paper typically have color difference ≤2.0, close to white cardboard. Reason: the ink composition of these colors is relatively simple, not easily producing color shift from fiber absorption differences.

Practical recommendation: when the printer receives a recycled paper order with a 'brand main color', priority should be given to small-sample color difference testing, rather than directly applying the original formula. If the brand main color is green/red/deep black, ΔE is generally high, and it is necessary to add 10-15% corresponding color tone concentration compensation in the ink formula.

3. 3 categories of printer coping actions — don't adjust the formula and wait for rework

To solve the color difference problem of recycled paper, the core is 3 actions.

Action 1: Establish a 'recycled paper-ink correspondence table'. Each time the printer uses a kind of recycled paper (brand + grammage + content), it must do a systematic ink proofing test: use 5-8 concentration gradients (standard concentration, +5%, +10%, +15%, +20%, -5%, -10%) of the brand main color (Pantone color number or customer-specified color) to proof on recycled paper, measure ΔE with a colorimeter, find the 'optimal concentration with ΔE≤2.0 on recycled paper'. This correspondence table is archived internally in the printer, and similar orders can be directly queried from the table to adjust the formula, without re-proofing each time.

Action 2: Agree on a 'recycled paper color difference relaxation clause' with the customer. The printer should proactively agree with the customer in the contract or technical annex that the color difference acceptance line for recycled paper packaging can be relaxed by 0.5-1.0 ΔE on the basis of the ISO 12647-2 standard. Reason: the physical characteristics of recycled paper determine that the color difference is higher than that of white cardboard. If the ΔE≤2.0 standard of white cardboard is applied to recycled paper, the printer can hardly meet it. Customers (especially eco-friendly brands) usually understand and accept this relaxation, because 'recycled paper + perfect color difference' is technically contradictory.

Action 3: Pre-communicate 'recycled paper color fluctuation expectation'. Before the customer places an order, the printer should proactively inform the customer that 'recycled paper will have ±3-5% natural color fluctuation, and the color of different batches of recycled paper may vary greatly'. This communication is important because many customers (especially design-driven brand parties) think recycled paper is 'standardized white packaging material', but actually commercially available recycled paper has color differences between batches, and the printer must write this expectation into the contract.

4. 'Is recycled paper necessarily eco-friendly?' — 3 categories of common pitfalls

Although recycled paper is often viewed as an eco-friendly choice, there are 3 categories of common pitfalls, and both the printer and the customer should be clear.

Pitfall 1: 'Recycled paper definitely has a lower carbon footprint than virgin paper'. Wrong. The carbon footprint of recycled paper depends on the transportation distance of the recycling chain, the processing technology of the recycled paper, and whether chlorine bleach is used. Some recycled paper is bleached with chlorine, and its carbon emissions are even higher than virgin paper bleached without chlorine. When the printer purchases recycled paper, it should look at the product's 'Carbon Footprint Declaration' or 'Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)', and not default to 'recycled = eco-friendly'.

Pitfall 2: '100% recycled paper is definitely more eco-friendly than 30% recycled paper'. Not necessarily. The fiber strength of 100% recycled paper is low and printability is poor, which may require more ink and more energy to achieve the same printing effect. In aggregate, the overall carbon footprint of some 50% recycled paper is lower than that of 100% recycled paper. Eco-friendly brand purchasers should not blindly pursue '100% recycled', and should look at LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) data.

Pitfall 3: 'Recycled paper can all be recycled'. Wrong. Recycled paper is itself the product of recycling, and usually cannot be recycled again (the fiber length is too short). After the 100% recycled paper packaging is used, it can usually only be incinerated or landfilled, and cannot be recycled again. So the eco-friendly value of '100% recycled' packaging is mainly 'reducing the demand for virgin wood pulp', not 'recyclable'.

5. 3 special considerations for the printer's recycled paper orders

In addition to color difference issues, there are 3 details that are prone to problems when the printer handles recycled paper orders.

Note 1: Thickness and stiffness of recycled paper. The thickness and stiffness of recycled paper are 10-20% lower than those of white cardboard of the same grammage, and the support of a gift box is insufficient. When the customer requires '100% recycled paper + high-end gift box', the printer should proactively inform the customer that 'recycled paper stiffness is insufficient, and grammage needs to be increased or inner lining added'.

Note 2: Surface defects of recycled paper. Because recycled paper contains impurities (small paper pieces, dark fiber points, ink residues), the surface defect rate is 3-5 times higher than that of white cardboard. High-end brands (cosmetics, electronics) have low tolerance for packaging surface defects, and the printer should let the customer see physical samples of recycled paper in advance to avoid the customer saying 'we don't accept this defect' only after the finished product comes out.

Note 3: Abrasion resistance of recycled paper. The fiber of recycled paper is short and the structure is loose, and the abrasion resistance is 30-50% lower than that of white cardboard. After being made into a gift box, it is easily scratched during transportation, warehousing, and shelf-stocking. If the customer is an export order or a high-end brand, the printer should recommend 'recycled paper + surface lamination' or 'recycled paper + surface UV coating' to improve abrasion resistance.
